Math Chat - Questions and Discussions

            I have a TWITTER account and want to share with you our discussion from "MATHCHAT" where I can talk to other math educators. Our question and discussion centered around the following for the date of August 26, 2010:            
                            What maths ( grade level or concepts ) do the parents tell the classroom teacher they can no longer do when helping their students??

           And the follow up question is:  What maths, then , should be included in the curriculum that every adult should know or be able to do??    

          My students and I will discuss these questions and we would appreciate hearing from you. Post your views,

  1. i have seen an octogon stop sign on my way to school. it is red with 8 sides with the word stop sign. i now know that the prefix octo means 8 sides.

    A.1 my mom doesn't help me with geometry.

    A.2 my mom thinks algebra and basic geometry should be included at least.

    A1.My dad thinks that my math was to hard for him when I was in sixth grade because they have not been in pre al or algebra for a long time.
    A2. He thinks every adult shoild know Algebra.

    A1 - Once my children started Algebra I get a little bit lost. For sure once they have started Algebra II as a Sophomore or Junior in high school I am definitely lost.
    A2 - I think that math that is used in every day life should be taught. For example, balancing check books, adding intererst, etc. These are things that every person will use throughout their life.

  5. A1 Once Algebra started it go t a little more difficult because the books changed and thing were tought differently.
    A2 Math is used everyday. The Metric System because measurements are changing.

    A1 I can understand and help with most Geometry and the simple Algebra. When fractions and exponents are involved I am a little lost.

    A2 I would like to see some time spent on math used in every day life. For example, financing big ticket items, credit card expenses and a budget.

  8. I haven't looked at an algebra problem for many years, but I was pretty good at it in high school and liked algebra. I don't know how much help I will be in geometry and trig but I'm hoping I can keep up with him through algebra.

  9. The biggest reason I use math now is for finance and budgeting. I think it is very important for everyone to understand enough math to know how to handle household budgets. I would want more concentration on that for the students, I've seen college kids who have a tough time learning how to manage their money.

  10. It has been more difficult to help my 6th grade daughter with math since it is now taught different than the way we learned. I think the students are catching on well with the new concept, but it may not be such a bad idea to refresh us parents.

    I feel that there should be emphasis on teaching students percentages, investing, balancing a checkbook, etc so they can learn to be fiscally responsible adults.
